"Molière Passion, or The Mask of Don Juan" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: A Ballet about the Price of Genius

The Alexandrinsky Theatre presents Boris Eifman's ballet "Molière Passion, or The Mask of Don Juan"—the choreographer's second exploration of the life and artistic universe of the great French comedy writer. The production continues the reflections begun in the production of "Don Juan and Molière" and, with renewed vigor, reveals the contradictory unity of stage and reality, the author and his characters.

As if on the other side of the curtain, the audience sees the mixture of intrigue, passion, doubt, and pain that gives birth to immortal comedies. For Boris Eifman, Molière is an artist who created his own theater and completely immersed himself in his calling. His multidimensional personality emerges in the ballet with particular clarity and dramatic depth.

The performance's visual appearance emphasizes this internal conflict. Vibrant sets, meticulous costumes, and a dynamic lighting design create a sharp contrast between the deceptively captivating world of the stage and the sorrowful, exhausting existence of the creator. Molière's life is a path of constant struggle for the right to act, write, and be heard.

Through the characters of "The School for Wives," "Tartuffe," and other plays, the ballet leads the audience along the winding paths of Jean-Baptiste's life—from the wanderings of a traveling troupe to the triumph of the Palais Royal and his final public appearance. The mask of Don Juan becomes both a reflection and a challenge for Molière, an alter ego in which temptation and hatred combine. On our website you can purchase tickets for the play "Passions According to Moliere, or The Mask of Don Juan" and experience the story of the great artist who paid with his life for the right to create the eternal.
