Anna Karenina at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: Immerse yourself in a world of passion and emotion

Modern dance and classical music, an original approach to any production and recognition throughout the world — this is the path taken by a small group created in the 70s of the 20th century and now known as the «Boris Eifman Ballet Theater».

Boris Eifman was involved in ballet from an early age, and, having consistently followed the path of a participant in a children’s dance club to a teacher at the iconic Leningrad Choreographic School, he eventually came to the creation of his own group.

Already the first productions, for example, «The Idiot» in 1980, showed the audience a completely new, a ballet unlike anything else. Above all, the company’s performances are distinguished by complex, original choreography. Another feature that makes Eifman’s works unique is the choice of literary basis, musical component, and stage solutions.

Productions of «Red Giselle», «Up & Down» based on the novel «Tender Is the Night» by Scott Fitzgerald, «Tchaikovsky. PRO et CONTRA, dedicated to the life and work of the great composer, Eugene Onegin, set to music by rock composer Alexander Sitkovetsky—such a diversity of repertoire cannot be found in any other ballet theater.

The International Ballet Prize «Benois de la Danse», «Baltic Star», «Golden Mask"—this is far from a complete list of all the awards received by the troupe at various times. Among the dancers, there are also nothing but stars. These are Maria Abashova, Lyubov Andreeva, Artem Lepkov, Vladimir Afonichkin.

What is the secret of the director as a choreographer? In his desire to reveal the depth of each character’s experiences, his passion for creating a clearly constructed dramatic story — that is his goal. «I see my main purpose in discovering new possibilities in the art of ballet, as knowledge of the inner world of man,» says Boris Yakovlevich himself.

At the same time, he turns not only to the classics, but also to modernity. Thus, in 2014, the premiere of the ballet «Requiem», dedicated to the siege of Leningrad, took place.

Each new production of the theater is an event. For example, «The Seagull. Ballet History» to music from the works of S. V. Rachmaninoff and A. Sitkovetsky based on the play by A. P. Chekhov «The Seagull» in 2022.

Ballet connoisseurs and those who come to the performances for the first time note that it is impossible to see these productions and not fall in love with this art form. So, if you see the Eifman Ballet on tour on your city’s posters, be sure to go!
