"Russian Hamlet" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre

The story is dedicated to one of the periods of the fate of Tsarevich Pavel. He is young and in many ways resembles Shakespeare's Hamlet, who is looking for an answer to the eternal "To be or not to be?" His bright impulses to serve the Motherland were suppressed in every possible way by those around him, and he, anticipating his tragic end, hastened to realize his peaceful intentions. His mother's dislike, hostile sentiments among the masses, intrigues and lies broke the personality of Pavel I.

The debut of «Russian Hamlet» took place on June 24, 1999. The stunning success of the production covered the audience and critics in Italy, Germany, France, the USA and a number of other large countries with a wave of surprise and admiration. In 2012, the ballet was removed from the theater repertoire, but was revived 5 years later. The main changes affected the choreographic component: since then, it has become more refined and emotionally vivid.

The performance features music by Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler.
