Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre presented a ballet based on Chekhov's work in St. Petersburg

In 2007, Boris Eifman already staged a similar work, but the author himself insists that this production is not a revival of that material. Boris Eifman dedicated this work to the thirtieth anniversary of his Theater.

«The Seagull» is a famous play in four acts by Anton Chekhov, which was first published in the magazine «Russkaya Mysl» in 1896. The stage version debuted on October 17, 1896 on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

It is a well-known fact that Chekhov himself called his work a comedy, even despite the fact of the death of one of the main characters. But Eifman is already unambiguous in his understanding. His «The Seagull» is a tragedy in the most classical sense of the word. The performance takes place not only on stage, but also in the rehearsal hall. And everywhere there is a subtle thread of struggle for love and place in life. Using Chekhov's plot, Boris Eifman composed a performance about the clash of generations and the conflict of old and new artistic dimensions.

One of the main roles - choreographer Konstantin Treplev - was brilliantly performed by the soloist of Boris Eifman's troupe Daniel Rubin. The prima Irina Arkadina was played by the soloist Maria Abashova. According to the artist herself, the image of her heroine is incredibly close to her, because she herself has been performing the main parts for more than twenty years.
